About Christopher Ringer

The organizers placed Christopher, the tallest in the group, on a small and feisty pony. The youth approached the animal with a gentle touch and a soothing "hello" as he slid onto its saddle and rode the pony along a dirt path.

Call him a local horse whisperer.

Christopher, a sophomore at Princess Anne High School's International Baccalaureate program, has loved horses since that day on the trail.

Prior to his 2004 show season, the Virginia Beach resident competed in dozens of local horse shows and won more than 100 ribbons - all without taking a formal riding lesson.

In February of 2004, the Suffolk Horse Show Association voted him Rider of the Year. The group, with more than 200 members, bases the award on a rider's overall performance throughout the year.

On a recent Sunday afternoon at Merry Oaks Stables in Windsor, Christopher pet his horse, Zip N Reb.

While most teen boys save up for a car, Christopher saved his earnings for a quarter horse. Zip N Reb responds to Christopher's touch, calm and steady as the boy strokes his face.

"You have to gain their respect," Christopher said with a slight southern twang. "It's easier to ride them when they trust you."
