About Christopher Ringer

Call Christopher a natural-born rider.

Beth Rapier, a horse trainer from Chesapeake, worked with Christopher and Reb for a month to get ready for the 2004 show season.

She sees potential in the young man and his horse.

"He's come a long way in a short period of time" Rapier said. "It could only be described as natural."

Christopher admits he got a late start. Most horse show competitors start riding lessons well before their teenage years.

Other riders say that Christopher just has a way with horses - almost as though he knows what his horse is thinking.

"There's just a connection," Christopher said. "It's hard to explain."

He knows that Zip N Reb likes carrots and the sunshine. His horse doesn't like the mud and the rain.

Christopher recalled a rainy day when Zip N Reb tried to throw him off, but Christopher stayed in control and calmed the horse down.

Horse riders have to be patient, Christopher said.

"It takes a long time to know a horse like the back of your hand."

The Ringer's, who live in Kempsville, have three horses at Merry Oaks Stables, including Zip N Reb.

Christopher's parents do odd jobs at the barn to help pay for the horses' board. Christopher works at the barn, as well. The money he earns helps pay for Zip N Reb's supplies and riding gear.
